Buzzio Social groups

Focused group rooms for clubs, classes, and projects that need shared backscroll — open-history so late joiners can catch up, permanent or temporary, honestly labeled not E2E.

On this page

Introduction

One room. Shared history. Clear ownership.

Social groups are Buzzio’s open-history group mode — a single focused conversation where durable history lets later joiners and other devices load past context. Pick permanent for ongoing clubs, or temporary (up to 30 days) when the room should die with the event. Cap: 500 members. Need operator-blind bodies instead? That is E2E groups — a different create-time choice.

We do not sell group data. Never. Not messages. Not member lists. Not invite tokens. Not open-history archives.

Why Buzzio is best for social groups

Honest mode labels

Open-history means shared continuity — we say so. E2E means operator-blind content. You choose at create.

Late joiners catch up

Shared backscroll is the product: new members can load past messages while they are members.

Permanent or temporary

Ongoing projects, or event rooms with concrete timers up to 30 days — then wipe.

Roles you can explain

Super Admin owns critical settings and invite regeneration. Admins run day-to-day membership and pins.

Invite security

Token links, optional password hash, approval queues, bans — membership gates, not key dumps.

Never sold

Shared rooms store more by design so the product works. That is not a license to broker your chat.

What you get

  • Open-history rooms
  • Permanent or temporary
  • Super Admin / Admin
  • Invite links
  • Optional password
  • Approval & bans
  • Pins · reactions · replies
  • Up to 500 members

How it works

Four group modes at a glance

  1. Permanent E2E

Ongoing sealed circle — covered on the E2E groups story. Buzzio cannot read message bodies.

  2. Temporary E2E

Same sealed crypto, hard lifetime up to 30 days, then the room ends.

  3. Permanent open-history

Shared plaintext backscroll for clubs and projects that onboard mid-way — this page’s focus.

  4. Temporary open-history

Catch-up history while alive; expiry deletes the group and wipes that room’s shared archive.

History mode and permanence are chosen at creation. There is no “switch to E2E later” path.

How open-history works

Members send into a shared room. Buzzio stores history so late joiners and other devices can page it back. Traffic uses TLS in transit; content is stored so the room works — Buzzio can read it. Default history is on the order of ~365 days (plan and media pool limits apply). Removed members lose server access; leftover cache on a left-behind device is a device-security concern.

Built for rooms that need onboarding — not for “Buzzio is blind forever.”

Roles & invites

Super Admin

  • Promote / demote Admins
  • Regenerate invite token
  • Change join password
  • Edit description & rules

Admin / Member

  • Admins: add / remove, approve joins, pin
  • Optional: only admins can send
  • Optional: hide member list
  • Invite links carry tokens, not keys

Permanent groups: join-attempt cap of 3; banned members cannot self-rejoin. Temporary groups: one-time invite hygiene per user class.

Permanent vs temporary

Temporary is a scheduled lifetime — presets from 1 hour to 30 days. When the window ends, members are notified, durable open-history content for that group is wiped, and clients clear the local thread. Permanent groups live until dissolve/delete by authorized roles.

Boundaries

Honest encryption

Open-history social groups are not end-to-end encrypted. TLS protects traffic; shared storage lets history and multi-device continuity work. Membership still gates who can load the room. Zero-metadata claims for private 1:1 do not apply here — groups necessarily keep membership and roles so administration works. That is administration, not a sold social graph.

Social groups vs E2E groups

Social (open-history)

  • Shared backscroll for late joiners
  • Buzzio can read — by design
  • Best for clubs, classes, projects
  • Same Super Admin / Admin model

E2E groups

  • Sender-key sealed bodies
  • Buzzio cannot read messages
  • New joiners get future traffic
  • Full story: E2E groups

Need many channels, Discord-style roles, and events? That is Communities — groups stay the focused small/mid room.

Tips

  • Choose open-history only when late joiners need past context
  • Use temporary when the room should not live in everyone’s list forever
  • Regenerate invite tokens like changing a door code
  • For operator-blind chat, create an E2E group instead
